About the Journal

Rig Tshoel

– Research Journal of the Royal Thimphu College is an openaccess, peerreviewed journal that reflects a core mission of the Royal Thimphu College: “To be a crucible of new ideas and knowledge that serves to enrich people’s lives and enhance the welfare of society.” Established in 2018, the journal embraces a multidisciplinary approach that welcomes diverse scholarly perspectives. Rig-Tshoel aims to generate meaningful debates in academia and practice that can inform policies in Bhutan and beyond through current, relevant and stimulating arguments.
We value inclusivity and are committed to fostering a vibrant research culture. Rig Tshoel particularly supports early
career scholars by providing a constructive and enabling platform that serves as a meaningful stepping stone in their academic and professional growth.

The journal follows a justintime publication model and welcomes submissions throughout the year. We invite contributions across social sciences (Anthropology, Business, Economics, Environment) and humanities  from both within and beyond the RTC community. Accepted manuscripts are published promptly upon completion of the peerreview and editorial processes, ensuring timely dissemination of new knowledge and ideas.

Generative AI Use

RigTshoel acknowledges the potential of responsible and ethical use of Generative AI in authors work. This is limited to correcting language editing errors especially since English is not a first language for many of us. However, it is permissible to only allow grammatical errors and under no circumstances should result in change of meaning. The use of AI in ideation and initial drafting with inadequate authors own judgement could result in rejection and retraction.

Article types

We welcome original research articles, research reports, review essays, MA/MSc/MPhil/PhD dissertations highlights, and book reviews. Submission can be made in either English (British variant) or Dzongkha, where word count is determined by the type of publication as indicated below:

1.Original research article: 5000 words

Original research article refers to submissions that are written with the aim to bridge scholarly research and practice that are based on research evidence. Such evidence can be quantitative, qualitative or mixed method, focusing on one issue to address. Authors should aim to produce  theoretical and empirical contributions through original, insightful, and important issues that add value to a discipline’s understanding of the issue and enhance the practice.

2.Research report: 4000 words

Research reports are summaries based on projects carried out through grants, fellowships, scholarships and other financial or data support. While such are usually written for internal readers, RigTshoel accepts such publication for it can add to understanding of the issue among other researchers who have little or no knowledge in the field.

3.Review essay: 3000 words

Review essays are analytical and critical writings about existing theories and literature on the chosen field. Such works aim to publish theoretical insights that advance understanding of the selected disciplines. While these works are evaluation of the existing literature, it should conclude by identifying potential research areas to explore in future.

4.Dissertation highlight: 2000 words

A report that is an extended piece of written work of a students’ dissertation. It is the reflection on, and discussion of the thesis undertaken for MA/MSc/MPhil/PhD. While authors can include the critique of others’ ideas, it is a report of your own research findings and interpretations.

5. Book review: 1500 words

A book review is an overview of a specific book’s contents, the author’s evaluation of the ideas presented in the book and recommendations for readers. Therefore, it should include the author's own perspectives in critiquing the book including the current location in theories and issues in the field.
